With segmentation, you can choose to target a part of your list, based on information you have about the contacts. For example, if you only want to send to everyone who lives in a certain city or has a specific interest. You can select one condition only or choose to combine several different conditions.

In this article, you will learn how you can use attributes to target a part of your list.

Before you start

  • You need a Standard Plan to be able to send on attributes.

  • You need to create the attribute you want to filter on before sending.

  • The contacts need to have the information in the field for the attribute.

  • You can update current contacts' information by clicking "Update existing contacts" when importing contacts.

  • You can currently filter with "And" - for example, Country: "England" -> "and"-> Club: "Manchester United".

Determine how you want to segment

Before you can target a part of your list, you need to decide what information the attribute field should contain for each contact. For example, for Elisabeth to email about her favorite club is Manchester United, the information below must be contained in the attribute field.

Make sure you also write down how you phrase yourself in the attributes. For example, if you write "Manchester United" or "Man Utd". Another example could be Webinar X -> "Yes"/"No".

How the information is entered in the fields affects how you can determine conditions and identify the contacts you want to send to. You can read more about this under "Conditions".

When this information is in the system and the mail is ready to be sent, you can on the page where you determine lists and sender choose to:

Send based on a filter

When you have selected one or more lists, you can click on "Add filter" under the lists field to send to specific people on that list, based on information contained in your attributes field. For example, to the people who have "Manchester United" as their favorite team.

You can currently filter with "And" - for example, Country: "England" -> "and"-> Club: "Manchester United".

Once you have clicked on "Add filter", you can choose which attributes to send on and then which conditions should apply. Based on the type of attribute you select, there are different conditions that will determine which ones are included.

Condition

When you have chosen which attribute should be used, you can choose which contacts to be included.

For example, if you would have an attribute, that has type “number”, in which your contacts have numbers between 0 to 100 and you want to send to contacts in a certain range or that has "10", the following conditions would be available to target contacts:

Equal

Includes all contacts that have the number 10

Greater than or equal

Includes all contacts with the number 10 and higher

Less than or equal

Includes all contacts with the number 10 and lower

If you have chosen an attribute, that has type “text”, and want to send a mail to everyone who supports Manchester United (Man Utd), you can choose one of the conditions below and type the keyword "Man Utd". In this case, the following conditions would be available to target contacts:

Equal

Includes all contacts where the field matches exactly with “Man Utd”

Contain

Includes all where information contains “Man Utd” ( Big Man Utd fan)

Begins with

Includes all where information starts with “Man Utd” ( Man Utd is #1)

Ends with

Includes all where information ends with “Man Utd” ( Fan of Man Utd”)

When you want to target a part of your list, make sure you know how the information in the attribute fields is written and how the different conditions can affect.

In the example above, you would have missed contacts who have written "Manchester United" or vice versa. Meaning that if you were to use "Manchester United" as a search term, you could have missed the contacts who had written "Man Utd".

If you were only to write "Club" -> "Contains" -> "Manchester", you could also have included the contacts who have written, for example,”Manchester City”. Therefore, it is helpful to write down in a document what you have decided, what options are available and use the same phrases.
